Baby Bat Season

2:30 AM · Jul 20, 2022

In Oregon, we are currently, (and hopefully temporarily), prohibited from rehabilitating bats due to Covid concerns. However, there are some things we can do to help them. This is their natal season, and there will be babies out there, who begin learning to fly at about 3 weeks old. If you find a baby on the ground, it will need help. Find a safe way to shade it without making contact, like an umbrella or a basket with good airflow over it, and call us asap at 541-459-4023. If possible, take a picture to send us. Bats dehydrate very quickly due to their surface area. Mother bats can't get enough lift to carry a baby off of the ground, so they are helpless. We are allowed, with the use of PPE and a long poled device, to lift the baby up into a shady tree, the eaves of a house or some other safe and shady spot. If it is high enough, the mother will come and get it that evening. Bats are amazing mothers and will quickly regather their little ones if they can.
